Cloth & Canopy
Offline shooting guide · Fictional concept directions. Adapt to the real subjects and clothing.
Garden photography rules checked October 10, 2026: shoot during dawn-to-dusk hours, keep visitor paths clear, remain out of planting beds, use permitted lawns and normal public seating, never climb trees or rocks. Commercial use needs separate permission. Include accompanying adults when considering total party size; the photography page gives no numeric small-group threshold. Confirm suitability with staff if the party is large and check current notices before the session. Ferns, broad leaves, grasses and suitable seating are scouting criteria, not promised exact locations.
Phone setup
- Clean the rear lens. Use native Camera, Photo mode, 1× rear main camera and native 4:3 capture (vertical display is 3:4).
- Choose botanical backgrounds by their real texture and tonal relationship to the actual clothing. No outfit color, leaf season or bloom is assumed.
- Tap a face for focus; use the exposure sun control only if needed to protect skin and garment highlights. Hold the phone level with two hands.
- Keep Photo mode for groups and layered leaves so computational blur does not cut out people or plants. A verified longer lens is optional in enough light, not assumed for every Pro Max.
- Scout coarse and fine leaf patterns, a permitted clearing with canopy, and a clean dry public bench. If a setting is unavailable, use the listed alternative.
- Position people before directing expressions. Give at most three natural instructions, check every face, hand and frame edge, then take a few relaxed variations.
Session timing
Allow 55–65 minutes including scouting, walking and pauses. Card estimates total about 42 shooting minutes. Start with 07 as a short warmup, then prioritize 10 → 11 → 12 before companions leave; finish with 01 → 05 → 03. If friends are short on time, skip the warmup and start with 10. No exact garden route is assumed. If seating is wet or unavailable, use standing alternatives for 06/08/12. Use overcast or shared open shade; backlighting depends on real sun and readable faces.
Shooting order
One permitted leaf-texture clearing, canopy and nearby suitable seat
Two Textures, One Friendship → The Texture Chorus → The Canopy Room → A Garden of Individual Gestures
Warm up with friends in two textures, then secure all three group constructions before companions leave. Check all faces at each setup. About 18 minutes.
Same seating or standing fallback, then nearest lawn with tonal layers
At Leaf Level → The Clearing in Color
Use two/four friends as available; complete seated texture and wide color-plane frames, then release companions. About 6 minutes.
Nearby public path beside coarse and fine leaves
Broadleaf, Fine Cloth → Fern Frequencies → Through the Understory
Make the signature cloth/leaf portrait, fern rhythm and three depth planes without moving plants. About 9 minutes.
Nearest suitable tonal edge, fine-leaf planting and dry seat
Color, Held Apart → Grasses, Kept Wild → A Seat in the Leaves
Finish actual outfit color, fine-texture full length and occupied seated portrait with a comfortable pace. About 9 minutes.
Priority five
The Texture Chorus: Every friend belongs to a three-plane botanical portrait; strongest group editorial.
Broadleaf, Fine Cloth: The coarse leaf / fine cloth relationship makes the creative direction instantly visible.
Through the Understory: Near foliage, clear person and distant plants provide a distinct optical construction.
Color, Held Apart: Actual wardrobe and planting tones drive a deliberate full-length color composition.
The Canopy Room: The canopy gives the complete friendship group a meaningful environmental room.
01 · Broadleaf, Fine Cloth
A broadleaf pattern and fine garment texture become two equally deliberate parts of a portrait.
Say to your subject
“Turn a little toward me.”
“Let your arms rest.”
“Look here, softly.”
Base arrangement: 1 participant(s)
Weight comfortable on rear foot, front knee loose, hips and torso turned 15° toward camera, shoulders down, elbows slightly clear of torso, hands resting separately below waist crop; chin level, head toward camera, gaze engaged and a small natural smile.
Set the scene
A permitted path beside a broadleaf planting, if present. Stand on path about 2 m in front of large leaves, without entering beds.
Background & depth
Large existing leaves form a coherent green pattern with believable detail, not a generic blur. Distances are starting points: use the camera distance below; keep background several metres beyond subjects, and any foreground foliage near the phone without touching it. Move the camera along permitted ground to remove labels, bright sky holes and unwanted visitors.
Camera
Portrait 3:4 waist-up; eye-height level 1× Photo from 2.5–3 m. Keep all head and shoulders, crop above hands, tap face. Maintain enough leaf detail to read the pattern.
Lighting
Open-sky shade or bright overcast illuminates face and leaves without glossy blown highlights.
Cloudy / shade
Open-sky shade or bright overcast illuminates face and leaves without glossy blown highlights.
If sunny
Move this whole arrangement into open shade with a bright open sky in front; exclude dappled patches on faces. Keep the same composition.
Backlit
Only if sun is actually behind subjects: move until every face receives open-sky light, exclude the sun from the frame, tap a face and check exposure. If faces stay dark or flare obscures them, use open shade.
Capture
Make three frames, pause to check faces and edges, then capture a small expression variation.
Check the frame
- Background reduced to meaningless blur
- Leaves or head too tightly cropped
- Garment highlights without texture
Comfortable alternative
Use a coherent small-leaf pattern if broad leaves are unavailable; preserve the coarse-versus-fine texture idea.
02 · Fern Frequencies
Fern fronds create a fine repeating rhythm around a quiet three-quarter figure.
Say to your subject
“Stand comfortably.”
“Rest one hand lightly at your own wrist.”
“Look just beside me.”
Base arrangement: 1 participant(s)
Feet stable and slightly staggered, knees unlocked, weight balanced, torso rotated 20°, hips neutral; shoulders loose, one elbow gently bent with hand resting at own wrist near waist, other arm relaxed, head facing mostly camera, eyes just beside the lens, curious mild expression.
Set the scene
A permitted path alongside a fern planting, if present. Stand on the path, with ferns several metres behind and no fronds touching clothing.
Background & depth
Readable fern fronds with fine repeated divisions; quiet larger leaves farther back. Distances are starting points: use the camera distance below; keep background several metres beyond subjects, and any foreground foliage near the phone without touching it. Move the camera along permitted ground to remove labels, bright sky holes and unwanted visitors.
Camera
Portrait 3:4 three-quarter ending mid-calf; phone level at chest height, 1× Photo from 3–4 m. Complete hands and head retained, focus face. Standard Photo keeps fern divisions readable.
Lighting
Even open shade; face a bright sky opening so fern background stays slightly quieter than skin.
Cloudy / shade
Even open shade; face a bright sky opening so fern background stays slightly quieter than skin.
Preview note: The preview is full length; follow the written mid-calf crop on location.
Check the frame
- Busy fronds crossing facial outline
- Hands tightly gripping
- Pattern dominating exposure
Comfortable alternative
Use any fine-leaf shrub visible from a path if ferns are unavailable.
03 · Color, Held Apart
Choose the background by the actual outfit’s lightness and color, making person and planting two distinct tonal masses.
Say to your subject
“Put one foot a little forward.”
“Let your hands rest.”
“Look here without forcing a smile.”
Base arrangement: 1 participant(s)
Feet comfortably apart, front foot slightly outward, weight mainly rear, knees soft, torso angled 15°; shoulders neutral, elbows relaxed, hands independently at sides, head toward camera, eyes gently at lens with confident but unforced expression.
Set the scene
A permitted lawn edge beside two naturally different planting tones. Stand 3–5 m ahead of the planting; choose the quieter tonal area behind the face.
Background & depth
Two existing adjacent leaf tones, such as lighter and darker greens; no particular bloom or wardrobe color required. Distances are starting points: use the camera distance below; keep background several metres beyond subjects, and any foreground foliage near the phone without touching it. Move the camera along permitted ground to remove labels, bright sky holes and unwanted visitors.
Camera
Landscape 4:3 full length; chest-height level 1× Photo from 5–7 m. Include shoes; tap face. Choose actual background contrast by moving sideways, not by changing clothing color.
Lighting
Bright overcast or shared open shade across both leaf tones; expose for skin and actual garment highlights.
Cloudy / shade
Bright overcast or shared open shade across both leaf tones; expose for skin and actual garment highlights.
Preview note: Illustrated blooms are not a garden availability claim; use actual clothing and plant colors.
Check the frame
- Background and outfit merging
- Different exposure across face
- Color changed artificially to force harmony
Comfortable alternative
Use light ground plus dark foliage if two leaf tones cannot be found; keep real wardrobe colors.
04 · Grasses, Kept Wild
A formal silhouette meets an unruly fine-leaf planting without theatrical movement or garden intrusion.
Say to your subject
“Stand beside the planting, on the path.”
“Keep one arm comfortably loose at your waist.”
“Look just beside me.”
Base arrangement: 1 participant(s)
Feet stable with a modest offset, knees soft, torso angled slightly toward camera, hips neutral; one forearm gently bent at waist with open hand near own side, other arm down, shoulders loose, head toward parent, eyes just off lens and a playful slight smile. Any wind remains incidental.
Set the scene
A public path beside ornamental grasses or another fine-leaf planting, if available. Stand on permitted path alongside the planting, never in it.
Background & depth
An existing loose fine-leaf mass forms a textured field beside and beyond the figure. Distances are starting points: use the camera distance below; keep background several metres beyond subjects, and any foreground foliage near the phone without touching it. Move the camera along permitted ground to remove labels, bright sky holes and unwanted visitors.
Camera
Portrait 3:4 full length, phone level at chest height, 1× Photo from 4–5 m. Tap face; retain hands and shoes. Use repeated frames only if a real breeze moves leaves or hair.
Lighting
Soft overcast or open shade, texture visible without dappled sunlight on face.
Cloudy / shade
Soft overcast or open shade, texture visible without dappled sunlight on face.
Capture
Make three still frames, pause to check faces and edges, then capture a small expression variation.
Check the frame
- Planting blocking garment shape
- Hand posed unnaturally
- Assuming a breeze that is not present
Comfortable alternative
Use a fine-leaf shrub in still air; the texture contrast works without movement.
05 · Through the Understory
Three botanical depth planes create a portrait that feels discovered within the garden.
Say to your subject
“Stand in the clear space on the path.”
“Relax your arms.”
“Look here through the opening.”
Base arrangement: 1 participant(s)
Stable feet out of crop, relaxed knees and hips, torso facing the open sky, shoulders down, arms resting naturally with hands fully outside waist crop; head neutral, eyes at lens, warm quiet expression. No leaning through or touching plants.
Set the scene
A public path where near foliage can be included without entering or moving planting. Subject on the path beyond near foliage; photographer stays on permitted ground.
Background & depth
A distinct darker botanical layer several metres beyond subject. Distances are starting points: use the camera distance below; keep background several metres beyond subjects, and any foreground foliage near the phone without touching it. Move the camera along permitted ground to remove labels, bright sky holes and unwanted visitors.
Camera
Landscape 4:3 waist-up; eye-height level 1× Photo from 2.5–3.5 m. Near leaves about 0.5–1 m from phone; tap face, not leaf. Frame complete face and shoulders, hands outside crop.
Lighting
Open shade with bright sky near camera; near leaves can be darker but face stays uniformly lit.
Cloudy / shade
Open shade with bright sky near camera; near leaves can be darker but face stays uniformly lit.
- Foreground crossing face
- Phone focusing on near leaves
- Plant bed access needed for viewpoint
Comfortable alternative
Step sideways along the path to reduce the near-leaf mass; keep at least two readable depth planes.
06 · A Seat in the Leaves
A comfortable seated shape sits within a tapestry of small and broad leaves.
Say to your subject
“Sit comfortably with your feet down.”
“Rest your hands where they feel natural.”
“Look just above my phone.”
Base arrangement: 1 participant(s)
Hips supported, feet grounded and lightly staggered, knees comfortable, torso slightly angled and upright; one hand rests on own thigh, other relaxed on seat beside own hip, shoulders easy, chin level, gaze just above lens, an open small smile.
Set the scene
An ordinary clean dry public bench with visible planting beyond and normal permitted access. Sit near the middle of a suitable seat, feet supported; leave no deliberate empty-seat composition.
Background & depth
Two existing leaf textures, one fine and one broad, readable around the torso. Distances are starting points: use the camera distance below; keep background several metres beyond subjects, and any foreground foliage near the phone without touching it. Move the camera along permitted ground to remove labels, bright sky holes and unwanted visitors.
Camera
Portrait 3:4 full seated figure; camera level at seated chest height from 3–4 m, 1× Photo. Retain hands and shoes, tap face, include enough background texture to read both leaf types.
Lighting
Uniform open shade or overcast over the seat and subject; face open sky for readable eyes.
Cloudy / shade
Uniform open shade or overcast over the seat and subject; face open sky for readable eyes.
Preview note: The preview leaves a large empty bench section; frame the occupied seat as directed rather than deliberately emphasizing an empty seat.
Check the frame
- Wet or too-small seat
- Background patterns merging with face
- Knees enlarged by close low camera
Comfortable alternative
Use a standing three-quarter frame within the same two leaf textures if suitable seating is unavailable.
07 · Two Textures, One Friendship
Each friend gets a different leaf texture while the light and depth unite them.
Say to your subject
“Stand close enough to feel together.”
“Relax your own hands.”
“One look here, the other just toward your friend.”
Base arrangement: 2 participant(s)
Two stand near each other at equal depth, stable feet, shoulders softly inward, hands individually at sides or own pockets if present; left head toward lens, right head turned only slightly toward left friend, both faces clearly visible, natural small smiles. Solo uses the boundary; trio adds one between textures without hiding faces.
Set the scene
A broad permitted path-edge clearing in front of two existing planting textures. One to three friends in a shallow group; base render uses two, one near each texture.
Background & depth
Fine-leaf pattern behind one friend, broader leaves behind the other; no forced wardrobe palette. Distances are starting points: use the camera distance below; keep background several metres beyond subjects, and any foreground foliage near the phone without touching it. Move the camera along permitted ground to remove labels, bright sky holes and unwanted visitors.
Camera
Landscape 4:3 three-quarter frame for two/three, portrait for solo; level chest-height 1× Photo from 3.5–5 m. Tap a face and check both; crop mid-calf, never across fingers.
Lighting
Even open sky in front of the whole shallow group; both faces share soft exposure.
Cloudy / shade
Even open sky in front of the whole shallow group; both faces share soft exposure.
Preview note: The preview cuts near ankles; follow the written mid-calf crop.
Check the frame
- One texture lost outside crop
- Friend’s face turned fully away
- Different exposure on the two faces
Comfortable alternative
Solo: stand at the texture boundary. Trio: add one clear central face slot at the same depth.
08 · At Leaf Level
Seated friends and low botanical foreground create an intimate garden-level picture.
Say to your subject
“Sit comfortably without squeezing together.”
“Rest hands on your own lap.”
“Look here or just beside me.”
Base arrangement: 2 participant(s)
Two sit with supported feet outside crop, hips comfortably apart, torsos slightly inward but upright, shoulders low, own hands separately on own lap; left looks toward lens, right just beside it, small different expressions. Solo/trio retain comfortable spacing and clear face slots.
Set the scene
A sufficiently wide dry public bench beside low existing planting; verify availability. One to three seated friends, base render two, comfortably supported without crowding.
Background & depth
A broader leaf plane beyond the public seat. Distances are starting points: use the camera distance below; keep background several metres beyond subjects, and any foreground foliage near the phone without touching it. Move the camera along permitted ground to remove labels, bright sky holes and unwanted visitors.
Camera
Landscape 4:3 waist-up seated view, phone level at seated-eye height, 1× Photo from 2.5–4 m. Keep complete hands if visible, or crop above all hands; focus face, check near leaves do not obscure people.
Lighting
Open-sky shade from the front across the whole seat; no dappled patches on one friend.
Cloudy / shade
Open-sky shade from the front across the whole seat; no dappled patches on one friend.
Capture
Make three still frames, pause to check faces and edges, then capture a small expression variation. Preview note: Preview foliage partly covers fingertips; keep whole hands clear or crop above them.
Check the frame
- Bench too small
- Near leaves hiding hands
- Faces at very different distances
Comfortable alternative
Stand at leaf level using a waist-up frame from the same permitted viewpoint; do not crouch into beds.
09 · The Clearing in Color
A wide view organizes real lawn, leaf and garment tones into a readable editorial landscape.
Say to your subject
“Stand together with room for your arms.”
“Keep shoulders relaxed.”
“Look here or just beside me.”
Base arrangement: 3 participant(s)
Three close but separate stances in shallow depth, stable feet, soft knees, gently varied torso angles, relaxed shoulders, individual hands at sides; two look toward camera and one just beside lens, all faces clear, calm youthful expressions. Solo/pair retain the same color-plane composition.
Set the scene
A broad permitted lawn with layered planting beyond. One to three friends grouped comfortably near a real planting-tone boundary; base render three.
Background & depth
Existing darker trees and lighter low planting make two additional botanical planes. Distances are starting points: use the camera distance below; keep background several metres beyond subjects, and any foreground foliage near the phone without touching it. Move the camera along permitted ground to remove labels, bright sky holes and unwanted visitors.
Camera
Landscape 4:3 full length and environmental context, eye-height level 1× Photo from 6–8 m. Keep all shoes and heads; subject height roughly half frame height, not tiny. Tap a central face.
Lighting
Soft overcast or even shade across group; avoid bright sky, retain lawn and leaf colors without boosting saturation.
Cloudy / shade
Soft overcast or even shade across group; avoid bright sky, retain lawn and leaf colors without boosting saturation.
Preview note: The preview shows three clear faces and a permitted-ground composition; actual lawn, flowers and clothing colors require scouting.
Check the frame
- Group too small
- Outfit tones merging with background
- Over-saturated lawn
Comfortable alternative
Move closer and retain two tonal planes if three are unavailable; preserve actual clothing colors.
10 · The Texture Chorus
Eight faces emerge above a near botanical plane, with coarse and fine leaves giving the group its editorial setting.
Say to your subject
“Gather loosely with a clear space for each face.”
“Relax your arms.”
“Five look here; three look just beside my phone.”
Base arrangement: 8 participant(s)
Eight stable stances, knees comfortable outside crop, shoulders relaxed, individual torso angles varied slightly, hands at own sides below waist crop; height differences create clear face slots, not hidden rear heads. Five look toward lens, three just to either side within 15° of frontal; small different genuine expressions.
Set the scene
A broad permitted lawn edge near low existing planting visible from public ground. Eight loosely gathered within a shallow depth band, each in a clear face slot; not a rigid row, grid or diagonal.
Background & depth
Fine-leaf and broadleaf planes remain readable behind the group. Distances are starting points: use the camera distance below; keep background several metres beyond subjects, and any foreground foliage near the phone without touching it. Move the camera along permitted ground to remove labels, bright sky holes and unwanted visitors.
Camera
Landscape 4:3 waist-up ensemble, level average eye-height 1× Photo about 5–7 m away. Near leaves 0.5–1 m from phone, below people’s faces. Tap middle face; check all eight sharp and visible.
Lighting
Uniform bright open shade or overcast over every face; near leaves may be darker but no face is shadowed.
Cloudy / shade
Uniform bright open shade or overcast over every face; near leaves may be darker but no face is shadowed.
Preview note: The eight-person preview is a formal two-row cluster with prominent blooms; use the written loose gathering and leaf textures. Keep every whole head clear with breathing room at frame edges, especially the right edge in four- and eight-person previews. Follow the selected group directions for varied gazes.
Check the frame
- Fewer than eight clear faces
- Near foliage across a face
- Loose group becoming a crowded pile
Comfortable alternative
Remove foreground from the frame and spread the same group slightly wider while preserving the two background textures.
2 people
Say to your subjects
“Gather loosely with a clear space for every face.”
“Relax your arms.”
“One look here; one just beside my phone.”
A broad permitted lawn edge near low existing planting visible from public ground.
Exactly 2 friends loosely gathered at shallow depth, each with a clear face slot; waist-up with near leaves along the bottom fifth and two leaf textures beyond. Stable bodies, shoulders relaxed, slight individual torso angles, separate arms and hands wholly below crop. About half look toward lens and half just beside it; natural varied expressions, no forced contact.
Landscape 4:3 waist-up; average eye-height; 1× Photo from roughly 3–4 m. Face depth within about 0.6 m; focus one face and check all. Keep complete heads and visible hands; retain shoes for full-length or seated frames.
Group lighting
Uniform bright open shade or overcast over every face; near leaves may be darker but no face is shadowed.
Group checks
- Incorrect participant count
- Face or hand obstructed
- Botanical texture lost or dominating exposure

11 · The Canopy Room
A complete group is held beneath a readable canopy rather than pressed against a foliage wall.
Say to your subject
“Stand together with room for every face.”
“Relax your own hands.”
“Look here, or just above the phone.”
Base arrangement: 8 participant(s)
Eight stable feet with room around individual arms, shoulders slightly inward, relaxed torso angles, taller friends placed where they leave clear face slots; hands at own sides or own pockets if present. Heads mostly neutral, eyes toward camera or just above phone, expressions open and varied; no extreme upward chins.
Set the scene
A broad permitted clearing beneath a high canopy with open sky ahead. Eight friends together on permitted ground in a shallow loose cluster, no one hidden.
Background & depth
High canopy with layered branches, a small restrained sky opening; no architectural element. Distances are starting points: use the camera distance below; keep background several metres beyond subjects, and any foreground foliage near the phone without touching it. Move the camera along permitted ground to remove labels, bright sky holes and unwanted visitors.
Camera
Landscape 4:3 full length, chest-height level or only very slightly upward 1× Photo from 7–9 m. Keep all shoes, heads and canopy; tap centre face, check exposure of all eight.
Lighting
Bright overcast with a sky opening ahead fills faces under canopy; reduce bright sky rather than darken people.
Cloudy / shade
Bright overcast with a sky opening ahead fills faces under canopy; reduce bright sky rather than darken people.
Capture
Make three still frames, pause to check faces and edges, then capture a small expression variation. Preview note: The eight-person preview is a straight row on an open lawn, with less overhead canopy than intended. Use the written loose gathering beneath a readable canopy. Any illustrated lake, flowers or exact tree structure are invented details; scout an accessible canopy and do not require a lake.
Check the frame
- Faces dark against sky
- Overlapping heads
- Upward phone angle stretching end faces
Comfortable alternative
Use an open lawn with a distant canopy as backdrop if the overhead space is too dark.
2 people
Say to your subjects

Landscape 4:3 full length, chest-height level or only very slightly upward 1× Photo from 7–9 m. Keep all shoes, heads and canopy; tap centre face, check exposure of all eight.
Group lighting
Bright overcast with a sky opening ahead fills faces under canopy; reduce bright sky rather than darken people.
Group checks
- Incorrect participant count
- Face or hand obstructed
- Botanical texture lost or dominating exposure
Use an open lawn with a distant canopy as backdrop if the overhead space is too dark.
12 · A Garden of Individual Gestures
Two comfortable seated friends and six standing friends share one leaf tapestry while retaining individual gestures.
Say to your subject
“Two sit comfortably; everyone else find a clear face gap nearby.”
“Put hands where they feel natural on your own body.”
“Look here or just beside me.”
Base arrangement: 8 participant(s)
Two seated with supported feet, each one hand on own thigh and other resting naturally; six stand with stable feet, relaxed separate arms, a few own hands in existing pockets only if comfortable. Slight inward torso angles, no leaning or contact required. All eight faces visible, gazes near lens with slight individual variation, warm restrained expressions.
Set the scene
A dry public bench beside enough permitted standing space and two readable leaf textures; verify on arrival. Two seated comfortably, six standing in clear nearby slots beside and immediately behind as space permits, no hidden faces.
Background & depth
Fine and broad leaf textures form one tapestry; no particular flower display required. Distances are starting points: use the camera distance below; keep background several metres beyond subjects, and any foreground foliage near the phone without touching it. Move the camera along permitted ground to remove labels, bright sky holes and unwanted visitors.
Camera
Landscape 4:3 full tableau at a level height between seated and standing eyes, 1× Photo from 6–8 m. Keep all heads, complete visible hands and seated shoes. Focus central face, check both depths.
Lighting
One continuous area of soft shade/overcast across seated and standing participants; bright sky ahead for all faces.
Cloudy / shade
One continuous area of soft shade/overcast across seated and standing participants; bright sky ahead for all faces.
Preview note: Some preview seated legs are crossed; use comfortable supported feet as directed. Blooms are illustrative.
Check the frame
- Bench or depth too cramped
- Rear face hidden
- Hands merging between friends
Comfortable alternative
If suitable seating is unavailable, retain eight standing face slots and the two leaf textures, removing the bench entirely.
